I am a children’s book author and digital collage artist who uses simple graphic design techniques, and original and stock art patterns as the building blocks of my illustrations. My keen eye for composition results in captivating scenes rich in color, texture, and patterns. I grew up reading the picture books of Ezra Jack Keats (The Snowy Day, Whistle for Willie, and Peter’s Chair) and am influenced and inspired by his work. My stories prominently feature Black characters, yet the universal themes cross genres and are loved and cherished by so many.
My debut picture book, “In Search of the Sandman,” is a bedtime story I made up for my daughter when she was a child, and was a semi-finalist entry in Half Price Books’ annual “Say Goodnight to Illiteracy” bedtime story contest in 1995. Becoming a grandma inspired me to illustrate and self-publish the book, and I named the lead character after my granddaughter, Charlie.
I am working on publishing the “In Search of” book series, with illustrations underway for “In Search of the Gingerbread Man” – which will include a gingerbread cookie recipe created by five-time James Beard Award nominated pastry chef, and Salty Tart bakery owner, Michelle Gayer. The third book in the series, “In Search of the Boogieman,” will soon follow, and promises to be "scary fun!"
I am a married, South Minneapolis native, and have a professional career as a grant writer for a children’s museum in Bloomington, Minnesota.
