MIDWEST BOOK AWARDS GALA

The 26th Annual Midwest Book Awards Gala was held on May 13, 2016, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Olson Campus Center at the Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. The awards ceremony is not a public event; reservations are required.

At this joyous event, we honor both the winners and finalists, the publishers and authors, and independent publishing in general. All the finalist entries are displayed during the reception. During the presentation, winners receive certificates and a bronze medallion.

After the award ceremony, finalists and award winners may pick up copies of the judges’ comments. Certificates for finalists are included in the judges’ packets. At that time, winners and finalists also may purchase foil seals for use in marketing efforts: gold for the winners and silver for the finalists. Award stickers may also be purchased at any time on the MIPA website: www.mipa.org.

February 8 meeting: Legal Issues

The February 8th MIPA meeting is a chance to have your legal questions answered by Patty Zurlo, an attorney who specializes in representing creative individuals like writers, artists, and musicians. This is your chance to ask copyright and trademark questions. And whether your brother-in-law can really sue you for mentioning him in your book. We’ll also continue the discussion about piracy and what you can do about it, plus the other side of crowdfunding and donating books—taxes.

Attorney Patty Zurlo is a professional classical musician and fiber artist as well as an adjunct professor at William Mitchell College of Law teaching Art and Cultural Heritage Law. Learn more about her athttp://www.zurlolawoffice.com.
